JP Morgan: Amazon Kindle Fire an unimpressive ?stepping stone?

JP Morgan executive director Mark Moskowitz is not impressed with Amazon’s first attempt in the tablet market. In a recent note to investors, Moskowitz said the tablet is just “noise,” and that it lacks too many features to be a valid competitor. “We are not impressed with Kindle Fire,? Moskowitz wrote. “In our view, [the Kindle Fire] is a stepping stone, at best, into the tablet market. We think that for any vendor to wrestle momentum from Apple, a fully-loaded offering is a must, and here, Kindle Fire falls short for now.? Read on for more. The Kindle Fire is more affordable than the iPad for consuming media such as eBooks, movies and music. As such, research firm IDC thinks

DOJ wants more info on Google?s planned Motorola Mobility purchase

The United States Justice Department has issued a request for more information from Google and Motorola Mobility concerning the search giant’s planned $12.5 billion acquisition of the phone maker. Google senior vice president Dennis Woodside explained that his company is still confident the deal will be approved. “We believe very strongly this is a pro-competitive transaction that is good for Motorola Mobility, good for consumers, and good for our partners,” he said, noting the “second request” form the DOJ was routine. “While this means we won’t be closing right away, we’re confident that the DOJ will conclude that the rapidly growing mobile ecosystem will remain highly competitive after this deal closes. Tweaked iPhone 4, white iPod touch rumors reinforced by Apple inventory leak

SKUs for a revised iPhone 4, believed to be the iPhone 4S, and new iPod touch SKUs have surfaced in Apple’s inventory system, 9to5Mac reported on Wednesday. The iPhone 4 SKUs reinforce rumors that Apple will introduce a watered-down version of the device, perhaps with just 8GB of memory, as the budget-friendly “iPhone 4S.” The listings also lend credence to early analyst reports that suggested Apple will not make any hardware changes to the iPod touch. Apple may instead only introduce a white version of the popular media player. According to 9to5Mac, Apple lists a new “N90A” codename in its system, which likely represents a small upgrade from the original iPhone 4 (the N90). The two SKUs for the phone

T-Mobile USA CMO issues public plea for Apple?s iPhone

T-Mobile’s chief marketing officer Cole Brodman recently published a letter on the company’s official blog addressing customers and discussing the carrier’s view on the iPhone. Brodman’s explanation of T-Mobile’s current iPhone situation, however, also reads a bit like a plea to Apple. “Today, there are over a million T-Mobile customers using unlocked iPhones on our network,” Brodman explains. “We are interested in offering all of our customers a no-compromise iPhone experience on our network,” he added, suggesting that Apple and T-Mobile have not been able to reach an agreement that would allow T-Mobile to sell the phone directly. Google testing MVNO waters, preparing to battle carriers [updated]

Google may be preparing to take its mobile efforts to the next level as it tests a Google-branded MVNO in Spain. Unconfirmed reports accompanied by photos of a Google SIM card and a Nexus S running on a “Google_Es” network suggest that Google is toying with the idea of becoming a Mobile Virtual Network Operator, or a company that provides cellular service by leasing capacity from existing wireless carriers and piggybacking on their networks. The photos suggest that testing is in the late stages as Google has already printed branded SIM cards, which have reportedly been delivered to Google Spain employees for testing. Millennial: Android still top OS in August with almost twice Apple?s iOS share

For the ninth consecutive month, Android topped the charts in Millennial Media’s “Mobile Mix” mobile device usage share report. Based on traffic to its mobile ad network, Millennial found that Android’s share of the mobile OS market slid in at 54% for the month of August, almost double the next closest platform. Apple’s iOS climbed to 28% in the No. 2 spot, followed by RIM’s BlackBerry OS at 13%. Android’s usage share was 61% and iOS held a 21% share in July, but the big swing in August is a bit misleading.Millennial’s August report combines smartphone and tablet traffic for the first time, so historical comparisons are rendered somewhat irrelevant. Additional details are scarce for the time being, but a Google-branded MVNO with deep Google Voice integration
