JP Morgan: Amazon Kindle Fire an unimpressive ?stepping stone?

DOJ wants more info on Google?s planned Motorola Mobility purchase

The United States Justice Department has issued a request for more information from Google and Motorola Mobility concerning the search giant’s planned $12.5 billion acquisition of the phone maker. Google senior vice president Dennis Woodside explained that his company is still confident the deal will be approved. “We believe very strongly this is a pro-competitive transaction that is good for Motorola Mobility, good for consumers, and good for our partners,” he said, noting the “second request” form the DOJ was routine. “While this means we won’t be closing right away, we’re confident that the DOJ will conclude that the rapidly growing mobile ecosystem will remain highly competitive after this deal closes. Intel kills MeeGo in favor of Tizen

Intel announced on Wednesday that it will be shifting its efforts from MeeGo to the new “Tizen” mobile operating system recently announced by The Linux Foundation. The move is in line with reports from early September that suggested Intel would move on due to a lack of consumer enthusiasm surrounding the OS. Amazon to launch Kindle Fire tablet for $200

We are live from Amazon’s Kindle Fire press conference in New York City where the online retailer is about to announce a $199 Kindle Fire tablet. Dueling Acquisitions Heat Up the Food Delivery Market

Seamless, a New York company focused on bringing delivery and takeout services to the Web, has acquired MenuPages�for its�database of 35,000 menus. Seamless, which made the acquisition from New York Media for an undisclosed amount, said the combined companies have 240 employees and are expected to book $400 million in orders this year. Last week, Seamless's competitor, GrubHub of Chicago, raised $50 million and acquired�Dotmenu and Allmenus. Terms were not disclosed. GrubHub projects that order revenues will total $225 million.

Google may be preparing to take its mobile efforts to the next level as it tests a Google-branded MVNO in Spain. Unconfirmed reports accompanied by photos of a Google SIM card and a Nexus S running on a “Google_Es” network suggest that Google is toying with the idea of becoming a Mobile Virtual Network Operator, or a company that provides cellular service by leasing capacity from existing wireless carriers and piggybacking on their networks. The photos suggest that testing is in the late stages as Google has already printed branded SIM cards, which have reportedly been delivered to Google Spain employees for testing. Millennial: Android still top OS in August with almost twice Apple?s iOS share

For the ninth consecutive month, Android topped the charts in Millennial Media’s “Mobile Mix” mobile device usage share report. Based on traffic to its mobile ad network, Millennial found that Android’s share of the mobile OS market slid in at 54% for the month of August, almost double the next closest platform. Apple’s iOS climbed to 28% in the No. 2 spot, followed by RIM’s BlackBerry OS at 13%. Newspaper Report Cites Amazon Warehouse for "Brutal" Heat

Amazon gets high marks for customer service, but conditions at one of its distribution warehouses are reportedly unpleasant and sometimes unsafe. A story in the Allentown, Pa., Morning Call reports that workers at an Amazon facility, many of them hired by a temp agency, complained about "brutal" heat and an unrelenting pace that sent several of them to the hospital this summer. HP to lay off 525 Palm employees this week

HP will lay off as many as 525 employees from its Palm division this week AllThingsD reported on Tuesday.
