Girls Around Me app both creepy and sobering

An application that briefly appeared on the iTunes store allowed users to physically track down single women and send them messages. But the app only worked because of sloppy privacy practices. Girls Around Me, which has just been pulled from the app store by Russian developers i-Free, worked entirely from publicly available information. It did [...]

Tour an 8-bit America with Google Maps tweak

Most online April Fool’s jokes are, to put it as kindly as possible, awful. Of all the companies that try to put creative “pranks” together, however, Google is among the best at managing April Fool’s stunts that are geeky enough to be laughed at in a good way rather than an uncomfortable, “I can’t believe someone thought this would be clever” way. This year, Google cooked up a creative new feature for Google Maps that lets users tour America with 8-bit graphics that will make any NES fan shed a nostalgictear. As an added bonus, the Zelda-like U.S. landscape in this new version of Maps transforms into an 8-bit Street View when the user zooms in all the way. A

Overloaded plasma panel creates awesome light show

The video above is the very definition of the cliche “don’t try this at home.” Created by YouTube user Aussie50, it depicts his effort to see how long an LG plasma television can hold up to the stress of being overloaded electrically by an ultra-powerful microwave transformer before burning out. Before you start to complain [...]

Visa drops Global Payments following theft of 1.5 million card numbers

Following a massive security breach, Visa has dropped Global Payments from its registry of providers that meet data security standards, The Associated Press reported on Monday. Global Payments CEO Paul Garcia said that the company will continue to process Visa transactions, however being dropped from the registry “could give our partners some pause that they’re doing business with someone who experienced a breach.” Garcia fully expects his company to be reinstated once it has been issued a new report of compliance, although he declined to specify when that might happen. The CEO maintains that the situation is “absolutely contained” and is being fully investigated. Global Payments confirmed on Sunday that hackers stole credit card numbers belonging to as many as
